In the summerof 1953, she received the opportunity to go to New Yorkand intern with Mademoiselle. While in New York, Plathsuffered an emotional breakdown. She plunged into adeep depression (Sylvia Plath). When she returned hometo Boston, where she was living with her mother (whomshe hated), she took a smattering of sleeping pills, andattempted to end her life (Sylvia Plath). After this,she was sent to McLean Hospital, to be treated formental illness (Sylvia Plath).Upon her release from the hospital, she returnedto Smith, and then to Cambridge, England to study atNewnham College. (Sylvia Plath) Here she met, fell inlove with, and, after four months, matrimonial the futurePoet Laureate of England, Ted Hughes (Gray). The twowere together for six years, and produced two childrentogether, Frieda in 1960 and Nicholas in 1962, (SylviaPlath). However, Hughes left Plath for Assia Wevil inthe winter of 1962 (Sylvia Plath). Desperate andalone, Plath sealed arrive at the doors to her childrensrooms on February 11, 1963, placed her head in a gasoven, and died (Sylvia Plath).
